Navigating Winter Illnesses in Northwest Florida

While Northwest Florida may not experience harsh winters, the cooler months still bring an uptick in respiratory illnesses like the flu, COVID-19 and RSV.
The region’s mild climate and active outdoor lifestyle, especially in Pensacola and along the Gulf Coast, can influence how these illnesses spread. Here’s what you need to know to stay healthy this season.
Flu (Influenza) and COVID-19
Flu and COVID-19 remain significant concerns during the winter months. In Northwest Florida, flu cases often peak later in the season, with Flu B being particularly prevalent. RSV season also tends to last longer here, stretching from October to April.
Flu symptoms: High fever, persistent cough, sore throat, muscle aches and fatigue. Children may also experience nausea or vomiting.
COVID-19 symptoms: Loss of taste or smell, shortness of breath and severe symptoms like chest pain or confusion.
Flu and COVID-19 share many overlapping symptoms, such as fever, cough and fatigue, making it challenging to distinguish between the two without testing. If you’re unsure which illness you may have, testing is the best way to confirm and ensure you receive the appropriate care.
Prevention Tips:
Get vaccinated for both the flu and COVID-19.
Wash your hands frequently and avoid touching your face.
Stay home if you’re feeling unwell.
The Common Cold
The common cold is a frequent visitor during the winter, even in Florida’s warmer climate. While generally mild, it can still disrupt daily life.
Symptoms: Runny nose, sore throat, sneezing and mild fatigue. Adults should seek medical care if they have symptoms like a high fever lasting more than 10 days or shortness of breath. For infants under 12 weeks, even a slight fever of 100.4 degrees requires immediate attention.
Bronchitis
Bronchitis is another common concern, especially for those exposed to environmental irritants like pollen or smoke, which are prevalent in the region.
Symptoms: Persistent cough, chest discomfort and fatigue. Seek medical care if you have a prolonged fever, blood in your mucus or severe shortness of breath.
Get Immediate Care for Your Winter Illnesses
In Northwest Florida, the outdoor lifestyle and beach activities can help reduce the spread of respiratory illnesses due to better ventilation. However, crowded indoor gatherings during the holidays can increase risks.
Staying vigilant with hygiene and vaccinations is key to protecting yourself and your family.
